TWAC/CNE 2016

Category Winner – Printmaking/Mixed Media

EILEEN MENZEL

The theme of all my work is opposites attract. My subject matter is two-fold: exploring the opposition of the man-made vs. the natural elements in landscapes for the 21st century and contrasting tensions of walled spaces in which we live in.

Biography

After graduating with a B.A. in Fine Art from Durham University in the UK and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto I taught high school Visual Art and Special Education for 30 years mainly for the Toronto District School Board. In retirement I paint and exhibit full time and my work has won numerous awards.

I also take year-round studio courses and adjudicate juried exhibitions throughout southern Ontario.

I am an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists as well as a Life Member and Exhibition Chair of the Etobicoke Art Group in Toronto. Memberships are with Artworks Oakville, the Art Gallery of Mississauga and Neilson Park Creative Centre where I serve on the Gallery Committee.

Upcoming exhibition:

Oct 12 – Nov 9, 2017 To the Power of Three, a 3 artist exhibition at The Assembly Hall, Toronto.

The theme of all my work is opposites attract. My subject matter is two-fold: exploring the opposition of the man-made vs. the natural elements in landscapes for the 21st century and contrasting tensions of walled spaces in which we live in.

I carry through with opposites in such ways as combines naturalism and abstraction, the golden section for composition and in complementary colours. But most importantly it’s in the transformation of light and shadows for the drama and the emotional atmosphere of the creative life.
